“When my grandfather was admitted to SGH years ago, he received very dedicated care throughout his stay. I was touched by the attention and compassion the nurses showered on him and that inspired me to be a nurse.
I’ve been in Community Care for four years now with the Home Nursing Foundation (HNF) where I’m continually inspired by colleagues, patients and patients’ families.
One particular memory left a deep impression on me. I was taking over my colleague for a home visit to a family with two sons enrolled under HNF. My duty was to check on the blood sugar levels of both sons. They were bed-bound and taken care of by their elderly mother in her 80s.
Despite her age, the mother insisted on taking care of her sons on her own. The thought of sending them to a home had never crossed her mind. She managed their daily activities – from meal feeding to bathing. I am incredibly moved by her devotion and love for her children. At her age, looking after two dependents is not easy – yet she did it with no help and without complaints. I salute her. Her actions show how great a mother’s love can be. Till today, this memory continues to inspire me as it reminds me that the role I play to support others does matter.
Receiving the Tan Chin Tuan Nursing Award is a big honour. I am happy to be recognised for my hard work and commitment. Looking ahead, I intend to pick up new skill sets to continue providing better care for patients.”
